The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issues Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record, to aliens who are:

• Admitted to the U.S.;
• Extending their stay;

All individuals need a Form I-94 except U.S. citizens, returning resident aliens, aliens with immigrant visas, and most Canadian citizens visiting or in transit. Air and sea travelers will be issued I-94s during the admission process at the port of entry.

A Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer attaches Form I-94 to the nonimmigrant visitor’s passport upon entry to the U.S. The visitor must exit the U.S. on or before the departure date stamped on the Form I-94. This is the “Admit Until Date” on the electronic Form I-94. The Form I-94 number also is known as the Departure Number or Admission Record Number.

So, when you enter in the United States as a nonimmigrant, the Customs Border Protection (CBP) officer examines your passport and visa and then issues either a passport admission stamp or a small white card called Form I-94. This indicates how long a student is allowed to stay in the U. S. and proves that they arrived in the country legally.

Nonimmigrants who arrive in the United States by plane or sea should be issued the passport admission stamp. If a student has received a passport admission stamp, there will also be an electronic I-94 record. Your electronic I-94 record should be printed immediately after arrival.

Nonimmigrants who arrive in the United States by crossing a land border will continue to receive the paper I-94 card. In these cases, you will not receive an electronic I-94 record.

Every I-94 record has an eleven-digit admission number. Although, a new I-94 number will be given each time the student re-enters the United States.

As of April 30, 2013, most Arrival and/or Departure records are created electronically upon arrival.
