What is class of admission?
According to USCIS information, the class of admission describes the visa category that was used to admit an immigrant to the U.S. as a permanent resident or conditional permanent resident.
You can find the Class of Admission code on the front side of a Green Card right under “Category.” It is usually one or two letters followed by a number. USCIS has changed the location on the card over time. You may find the code in a different place on older cards.
Another important piece of information is the date of admission, which shows the date that USCIS granted you a permanent resident or conditional permanent resident status.
If you entered the country on a non-immigrant visa and adjusted your status to permanent resident, for example, don’t confuse your initial nonimmigrant visa status with the immigrant visa category under which you became a permanent resident.
You may be able to find the Class of Admission code on other documents if you lost your Green Card. If you first entered the United States with an immigrant visa, the Class of Admission is printed on it.
If you were admitted to the United States as a conditional resident, your initial code began with a “C.” This code gets updated once the conditional resident removes conditions on residence.
Individuals who adjusted their status to permanent resident while already in the United States may be able to find Class of Admission on the I-485 approval notice.
What category is I-485?
An applicant (relative or husband or wife getting their Green Card) can file an I-485 based on seven major categories:
- Family-based;
- Employment-based;
- Special immigrant;
- Asylum or refugee;
- Human trafficking victim or crime victim;
- Special programs;
What is class of admission on Form I-90?
Class of Admission refers to the visa category that was used to admit an immigrant to the U.S. as a permanent resident or conditional permanent resident.
Sometimes the USCIS will ask for this code when you send them an application, like a Form I-90, for example, to apply for the Green Card renewal form, you will need to put in the three-character code.
Since you need to keep your Green Gard always up to date to remain a permanent resident in this country, it’s really important to know what it is! Keep in mind if you put the wrong code could cause the USCIS to misclassify you, or even consider you a nonimmigrant.
What is class of admission on Form I-130?
Class of Admission on Form I-130 refers to the visa category that was used to admit an immigrant into the United States as a permanent resident or conditional permanent resident.
Why is This Code so Important?
During the immigration process to get U.S. Citizenship, this class may change. You must understand these changes are important. If you put the wrong class on your Green Card renewal, for example, you could face delays in your process.
