What if Citizenship is denied?
What if Citizenship is denied? When your U.S. citizenship application is denied by the USCIS, you will not become a U.S. citizen. If it happens, the first step is to understand the reasons for your application denial.
Above there are some reasons for U.S. Citizenship application denial:
- Failing the U.S. Citizenship Test;
- Committed Crimes;
- Not meeting continuous residence requirements;
- Not meeting physical presence requirements;
- Not fulfilling financial obligations;
- Committing fraud;
- Lying to the USCIS;
- Young men failing to register for selective service;
Keep in mind, that in addition, according to USCIS instructions, to prepare for the reading, writing, and civics portion of the naturalization test, you will need to prepare for the speaking portion of the naturalization test and meet all other naturalization requirements. The speaking test occurs during the eligibility review.
During your naturalization interview, a USCIS officer will review the responses you provided on your Form N-400 with you. The USCIS officer will ask questions to clarify or confirm your responses. Prepare yourself for the English-speaking test by making sure you understand each question on the application and be able to respond to each question according to your situation.
USCIS analyses your ability to speak English checking if you generally understand and can respond accurately to the USCIS officer. Applicants may ask the USCIS officer to repeat or rephrase questions during the naturalization interview.
There are some exceptions motivated by age and time as a lawful permanent resident, some individuals are exempt from the English requirements for naturalization and may take the civics test in the language of their choice.
Can you apply for citizenship again after being denied?
In general, you can re-apply for citizenship once you fit the eligibility requirements. If you fail your U.S. citizenship test, you get a second chance to take the test. If you fail the test a second time, your application will be denied. In this case, you can re-apply again.
According to USCIS rules, you will be retested during a new interview on the part of the test that you failed (English or Civics) between 60 and 90 days from the date of your initial interview. You will have to complete the application and pay the filing fees such as the first time. We strongly recommend you be prepared well for the citizenship test at this time.
In cases where your application was denied for not meeting the eligibility requirements, you can re-apply as soon as you meet the requirements. In cases where your application was denied based on crimes committed, found inadmissible or you lied then you cannot apply for citizenship again.

Besides, USCIS publishes a complete list of the 2008 and 2020 versions of the civics test. That means the USCIS officer will ask the applicant only the civics questions on the lists for both versions of the test.
