How Can I Renew my U.S. Tourist Visa?

A U.S. Tourist Visa may be valid for up to ten years and multiple entries, depending on your nationality.

The U.S. consulate will treat a visa application as a renewal if the old visa expired one year ago and was issued for the maximum period of validity allowed in that country.

There’s no guarantee that your visa will be renewed. Many applicants are surprised to discover that what receive a denial.

What Do I Do When My B-2 Visa Expires?

When your visa expires, you can renew it through a very similar procedure to the first application process.

The whole process of application has to be followed always you want to renew your visa.

This is the general rule, even if you apply for renewal while the current visa is still valid.

Complete again the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application available at the Department of State’s website called the DS-160.

Pay the visa fee which is $160 and attend your visa interview at the U.S. consulate in your country.

Make sure you’re on time and that you have all your required documentation for your visa interview!

Your B-2 visa will expire after six months, but you want to stay in the U.S., you can request a six-month extension using Form I-539. However, you will need to provide proof that:

  • You must prove you have financial conditions to stay longer since you cannot work while in the U.S. on a B-2 visa.
  • You have a strong reason to stay in the U.S.

Remind you must file for your extension before your B-2 visa expires!

How long before expiry can I renew my U.S. Tourist Visa?

Don’t worry about that because US visas are valid for entry into the United States until the effective expiration date on the document.

You choose if you want to apply for a new visa before or after your current visa expiration date.

Is my U.S. Tourist Visa eligible for renewal?

Remind that you will always need to prove that you have the financial resources to pay for your trip.

If you or your child attended public school on a tourist visa, for example, your entire family’s visa renewals could be denied. Check another common situations that your tourist visa renewal may be denied:

  • You overstayed a previous visa;
  • You performed unauthorized work in the U.S.;
  • Your travel record shows other unexplained patterns;
  • after a major change in family or life situation, you can no longer demonstrate strong ties to home country;
  • You or your spouse had a medical care in the U.S. and failed to pay the bill;
  • You or your children attended a U.S. public school;
  • You are unemployed;
  • You were arrested or convicted of a crime after your last Visa was issued;
  • You’ve gone from minor to adult since last Visa was issued;
  • Inconsistencies turned up in your application or visa interview;
  • An inexperienced officer handled your Visa Renewal Application.
